FISHING One of the premier Stripped Bass fishing areas on the East
Coast, recent Army Corp of Engineer work has broken
Sandy Point (a barrier island) into two pieces which has increased salinity and
ocean water exchange at the mouth of Pawcatuck River. The Salt Flats between Napatree Point and Sandy
Point have increased in size, creating an ideal nursery for baitfish growth. These shoals offer ideal wading for fly fisherman when the larger
predatory fish come to feed. The sandy shoals also are home to numerous mussel
and sea clam beds. Schools of Whitefish/ Smelt (Shiners ), Sand Eels, Menhaden (Bunker), and Eels are abundant. As the tide changes and flushes these baitfish out into the ocean there are numerous barrier reefs (Sugar Reef and Lords Passage) which are noted Fly fishing hot spots. Albacore, False Albacore,
Stripped Bass, Bluefish, Halibut, Porgies and Black fish all are caught off these shores. If you don't have a boat they can
also be caught from shore or Charter boats (refer to CT RI Activities Link on
main page for Boat Charter) .
